September 2011 - The 2011 artist-in-residence will be Hanoi artist Nguyen Quang Thang. Thang will come to the U.S. in mid September and spend two weeks in Boston, one week in New York City and one week in the Washington area. Thang is a member of a group of artists in Hanoi who make up the Zenei art group established in 2006, and are now referred to by many as the second Hanoi Gang of Five. These artists’ works are steeped in Vietnamese intellectual and written traditions that have long been ignored. They are now resurrecting and rejuvenating the artistic potential of Han Chinese characters and Vietnam’s ancient Nom script in the service of their contemporary culture. September 2011 - Four filmmakers from Ho Chi Minh City will travel to Boston under IAP sponsorship to film Henry Prunier. Henry is the last surviving member of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) Dear Team who worked with Ho Chi Minh and General Vo Nguyen Giap in northern Vietnam during the summer of 1945. The team includes artists Mrs. Dang Thi Duong, Colonel Phan Oanh, Mr. Nguyen Mong Long and Mrs. Uong Thi Hanh. They will spend one week in Boston, one week in New York City and one week in Washington. When they return to Vietnam they will work on a documentary film about this critical period of U.S./Vietnam relations. For additional information please contact the IAP.
September - January 2012 - IAP director David Thomas will teach a course titled The Art and Culture of Vietnam at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design. He will team teach the course with Boston fiber artist Janet Hansen Kawada. The course includes a two-week trip to Vietnam to meet with artists and visit cultural sites. January 2012 - Boston printmaker Carolyn Muskat will return to Hanoi for two weeks under IAP sponsorship to conduct advanced workshops in lithography. During the fall of 2010, Carolyn held beginning lithography workshops at the new print studio at the Hanoi Contemporary Art Center. Carolyn is the owner of Muscat Studio in Somerville, MA, and former President of the Boston Printmakers. She is a well-respected artist and printmaker who teaches at many Boston area art schools. 2011 – 2016 - Documentary filmmaker Ken Burns asked David Thomas to advise him on his upcoming documentary on Vietnam. David will be part of a team of many advisors for this 12-part ten-to-twelve hour documentary. He will be primarily advising Ken on his work in Vietnam.
