As Seen by Both Sides: American and Vietnamese Artists Look at the War

TRAN VIET SON

Tran Viet Son, the current president of the Fine Arts Department of the Ministry of Culture and Information, is an extraordinary draftsman. As an army artist during the war, he drew many images of American prisoners and their accouterments. These drawings are visual reportage capturing the essential nature of a sleeping GI or the look of a well-used boot.

" Many American prisoners told me and my friends that their knowledge of Vietnam had changed. At first they thought the Vietnamese people just fought and fought, and that there were no people like doctors, painters, and poets. Now their perception changed"
