| Tin Ly is the only American exhibitor who was born in Vietnam. He is of Chinese extraction but, like other Chinese living in Vietnam, he and his family were forced during the Diem regime to take Vietnamese citizenship or lose their fortunes and be expelled.
During the Tet offeensive, Ly, his parents, and his sisters hid in an underground cellar. "At night we heard people shouting, tanks rolling around, and even bullets on the roof. It is hard to forget those noises. It went on for several days. We saw a lot of dead bodies. I was only fourteen years old. "I learned a lot about myself when painting these pictures, especially about my ability after all this time to portray violence. My intent was not to describe but to let these memories emerge in the paint itself." |
