As Seen by Both Sides: American and Vietnamese Artists Look at the War

RICK DROZE

Every year Rick Droze, a former marine and member of a group called Peace for Action, visits high school classes to speak to students about the Vietnam War. His motive is clear: He wants "to tell them what I wasn't told about Vietnam" so that they will better understand the issues of war and peace.

" In some ways my life revolves around my experience in Vietnam. It was a profound, ultimately good experience, but I shudder to say it because I was personally responsible for making the lives of many Vietnamese miserable, intolerable. Am I a better person for this? This is a question I expect to try to answer for the rest of my life. I witnessed the most horrific acts known to mankind, I am a survivor of an atrocity, and I have no choice but to educate others."
