As Seen by Both Sides: American and Vietnamese Artists Look at the War

MICHAEL ASCHENBRENNER

The Fine Arts association in Vietnam, in contrast with the private, nonprofit groups with similar names in the United States, is an official government agency. Since 1985 Quach Phong has been the Secretary General of the Ho Chi Minh City Fine Arts Association. He oversees with energy and efficiency the Association's three successful factories. They produce artist's materials, porcelain, and lacquerware. As one might expect, Quach Phong has little time to paint.

"It is very strange to me that you bring this work to your country, that you have the courage to let everyone know about the reality of the war in Vietnam. I hope the next exhibition will be about peace."
