As Seen by Both Sides: American and Vietnamese Artists Look at the War

PHAM NGUYEN HUNG

Pham Nguyen Hung is only now fulfilling a long-held dream of attending the Hanoi Fine Arts College. His job at the Social Welfare Ministry and his family responsibilities allow him to study only part time, three months a year for five years. The works in this exhibition were executed in 1971 during a three month course in his army unit.

"When I was a child many, many teachers told me that I had talent, but I didn't have the opportunity to study in art school...I took my first art course in the army. All of the army branches have their own courses. They also teach creative writing, poetry, music, and popular performance."
