As Seen by Both Sides: American and Vietnamese Artists Look at the War

Nguyen Tho Tuong

Although Nguyen Tho Tuong was enthusiastic about painting as a young boy, he had received no formal art training when, at the age of nineteen, he joined the North Vietnamese Army. He worked in the propaganda section and assisted in the training of new soldiers before they went into battle. Like many of his colleagues, he got his first art training in the Army, where he took a six month course in painting in which he was taught to make posters and on-site drawings of military activities.

"I have a very deep impression and recollection of the people who were living under the raids of the B-52 bombers. I know the hardships. In spite of them, people like this woman in my painting are studying for the future."
Nguyen Tho Tuong from an interview with Lois Tarlow
