As Seen by Both Sides: American and Vietnamese Artists Look at the War

NGUYEN THE MINH

At the time of our visit to Hanoi in the spring of 1999, Nguyen The Minh was the President of the Fine Arts Department of the Ministry of Culture. He was given the position by the state, he says, because "as a painter I know this work." He also proved to be a very capable administrator as he negotiated matters dealing with this exhibition.

"We have a lot of work to do for renovation, but the organization of the society is in very good order. At the same time, we lack materials. We expend much effort, but the results are limited. People in our department and in our society try to improve everything for their lives and for their country."
