As Seen by Both Sides: American and Vietnamese Artists Look at the War

NGUYEN THE HUU

Nguyen The Huu's homeland is Dien Tien Province, near the old imperial city of Hue. After attending the Hanoi Fine Arts College, he went into the army in 1970. As an artillery soldier he took part in the Ho Chi Minh Campaign. Sometimes he managed to find time to paint. He recorder the everyday activities of the war without the explicit violence.

"I think it's a good idea to have an exhibition in the United States about the war that doesn't make people think of cruelty. There are so many war paintings showing people killing each other with swords, guns and bombs." The Huu made many paintings that were lost when his friends, who were transporting them to safety in Hanoi, came under attack."
