As Seen by Both Sides: American and Vietnamese Artists Look at the War

Nguyen Minh Dinh

It is unfortunate that the logistics of this exhibition precluded sculpture, because that is Nguyen Minh Dinh's primary medium. He attended the School of Industrial Arts in Hanoi from 1950 to 1954, where he learned to make lacquer in different ways. From 1958 to 1963 he was employed in film workshops. He joined the army in 1963 and was assigned to duty as a typist.

"My main medium is sculpture, mostly in cement, although I can carve stone and wood. We meet with difficulties in making the sculpture in Vietnam because we don't have enough materials."
Nguyen Minh Dinh from an interview with Lois Tarlow
