As Seen by Both Sides: American and Vietnamese Artists Look at the War

NGAN CHAI

Ngan Chai is one of the younger artists in the exhibition. Although he joined the military before going to art school, he was talented enough to be an army artist. He made drawings and posters in his work with an army transportation unit. In 1982 the army sent him to study at the Hanoi Fine Arts College. He is the only artist in the exhibition that is still in the military, and he intends to stay "as long as the army requires me to stay." A standard career is twenty-five years but, he says, "I can stay longer if my health is good."

"I wish the people who come to this exhibition will better understand the war in Vietnam."
