As Seen by Both Sides: American and Vietnamese Artists Look at the War

JOH PLUNKETT

John Plunkett served in the infantry in the rubber plantation near Ben Cat and Tay Ninh. His combat experience, he says, consisted of "waiting with bait in the woods for someone to happen by. I sometimes felt like I was participating in a murder." He understood that "of course they did the same thing, but it was their country." Like many artists who did tours of duity in Vietnam, Plunkett took up that experiencs in his work for many years after his return.

"Voilence is not always loud. It is sometimes quiet and quick. Sometimes it's a feeling in the air, ready to erupt."
