As Seen by Both Sides: American and Vietnamese Artists Look at the War

HUYNH PHUONG DONG

Someday, when this country sees beyond the war, there will be a Vietnamese ambassador to the United States. Huynh Phuong Dong would be the perfect choice. He is warm, wise, full of life, and a very funny raconteur. Although one of the older artists in the exhibition, he is one of the youngest in spirit. He told us that he shaves two years off his age so that he can work longer and goes by the name of his son. His true name is Huynh Kon Nya.

"I met some American prisoners. Some of them shed tears. They never wanted the war. I understood that they did not know the reason for it. I felt very sorry for them. I did some drawings and paintings of them."
