As Seen by Both Sides: American and Vietnamese Artists Look at the War

DAVID SCHIRM

Tim O'Brien, in his book The Things They Carried, describes wartime Vietnam as "a place where men died because of carelessness and gross stupidity." In David Schirm's experience, the war was indeed a tragic comedy of errors. He enlisted because he hoped to direct his participation away from combat into something positive by going to Officers Candidate School in engineering. The strategy backfired when he was dismissed from OCS for letting his platoon eat ice cream bars.

"There's a lot of emotion connected with this show, with the participation of the Vietnamese. It's a healing show. It makes up for when you got home and didn't get the parade."
David Schirm from an interview with Lois Tarlow
